Navigating Clearing: A Guide for Students

31 July 2024
Let’s dive into what Clearing is, who it’s for, and why it might be the perfect next step for you.

So, you’ve just wrapped up your A Levels or finished your final year at College, and you’re probably feeling a mix of excitement, relief, and maybe a bit of uncertainty. If your plans didn’t quite go the way you expected or if you’ve had a last-minute change of heart about where or what you want to study, don’t worry you can still go through “Clearing”.

Let’s dive into what Clearing is, who it’s for, and why it might be the perfect next step for you.

What is Clearing?

Clearing is a part of the UCAS application process that helps Universities and Colleges fill any remaining places on their courses. It’s a great opportunity for students who haven’t secured a place at University yet, haven’t received the grades needed for the course they originally applied for, or want to change their course or University/College entirely. Think of it as a second chance to get into a University or College that suits you.

Who is Clearing For?

Clearing is for you if:

  • You didn’t get the grades you expected Maybe results day didn’t go as planned, and you didn’t meet the conditions of your firm or insurance offer.
  • You got better grades than expected Congratulations, you did better than anticipated, and now you’re thinking of aiming higher.
  • You changed your mind Decided that the course you applied for isn’t quite right for you anymore? Clearing lets you switch gears altogether.
  • You are not holding any offers If you didn’t get any offers from your initial applications or if you declined all your offers, Clearing is a way to find available courses.

How Does Clearing Work?

On results day, a comprehensive list of Universities and Colleges that are still accepting applications will become available on UCAS. Using the UCAS Clearing search tool you will be able to find courses that interest you. It’s updated regularly, so keep checking back.

You can then contact Universities and Colleges directly to discuss your interest. Be ready to explain why you want to join their course and how your qualifications make you a good fit. This might involve a phone call or filling out an online form. If a university offers you a place and you want to accept, you’ll need to add the Clearing choice in UCAS Track.

  • Exploring New Horizons Universities and Colleges often have hidden gems in their Clearing lists including courses and institutions you might not have considered initially. This could be your chance to discover something amazing.
  • A Fresh Start Didn’t get into your first choice? Not to worry! Clearing can lead you to a University/College and course where you’ll thrive, often in an environment that’s a perfect fit for you.
  • Less Competition By the time Clearing rolls around, the intense competition of the initial application phase has cooled down a bit. You might find it easier to secure a spot on a course you’re passionate about.
