Laila-May has been elected as this year’s Students’ Union (SU) President and has plans to support all students across EKC Canterbury College campus.
Each year, students vote to elect a new or continuing SU President to represent the students in the Students’ Union. Their purpose is to give all students a voice at College and to help create a welcoming community among their peers.
We spoke to Laila-May about her ambitions and what sets her apart from previous elected presidents.
She said: “I’d like to help a lot more with mental health support and letting people know that they’re not alone. There’s always someone else out there who knows how you’re feeling. I want people know that they’ve got peer support as well as staff support.”
An SU President is supported in their role by our Student Experience Officers, who are based in our Learning Resource Centre (LRC).
Their commitment to organising fun, engaging events and activities help create a vibrant College experience, giving students plenty of opportunities to connect, get involved and enjoy their time together.
When we asked Laila-May what she is most excited about for this new year, she said: “The main part of what I’m excited about is to make a significant change. I’ll be listening to what students want.
“I am always willing to chat. Anyone’s always welcome to reach out, message me on Teams or anything like that. I just love to talk to people a lot.”
