EKC Canterbury College students filled ‘The Street’ today for the annual Freshers’ Fayre, as new and returning students came together to start the new academic year.
The College was full of energy as students explored the wide range of activities, support services and opportunities available to them. From fun challenges and free treats to advice and information from local organisations, there was plenty to discover.
A fantastic selection of stalls filled ‘The Street’, offering something for everyone. Students could speak with organisations including East Kent Mind, NHS Kent and Medway Talking Therapies, British Transport Police, Network Rail and Trading Standards, gaining advice on topics ranging from mental health and wellbeing to personal safety and consumer awareness.
Fitness providers including PureGym, Sochin Karate Club and the EKC Canterbury Sports Centre were also on hand to encourage students to stay active and explore new hobbies.
Alongside external organisations, College teams and student-led societies showcased the many ways students can make the most of their time at College. From the Careers and Wellbeing teams to the Students’ Union, Book Society and Dungeons and Dragons Society, there were plenty of opportunities to meet new people, develop skills and pursue new interests outside the classroom.
Our Student Experience Officers, Ella and Joe, were also on hand throughout the event and highlighted the value of the Freshers’ Fayre for all students.
Ella said: “It’s been a very busy event. We’re glad it’s been so popular and it’s a great chance for new students and existing students to see just what College life is all about.”
Students across the College also enjoyed the opportunity today to get involved and discover something new.
Ellis, who currently studies Level 2 Carpentry, enjoyed exploring the different stalls and taking part in the activities. He said: “I really enjoyed the PureGym stand as they had the wheel where you could win prizes. I love College so far as my course is only three days a week too so it’s different from school.”
For Mariella, studying Level 3 Public Services, one of the highlights of the event was the chance to spend time with her new friends and make memories.
She said: “As well as the free ice cream, I’ve loved being able to make new friends at College. As my course is Uniformed Public Services, I’ve also been exploring what sort of careers I may want to go into in the future, which is exciting to think about.”
With the new academic year now underway, the Freshers’ Fayre has helped students settle into College life, make new connections and discover the many opportunities available to them both on campus and in the wider community.
