Inside scoop: Studying Automotive at EKC Canterbury College

26 October 2026
Hear from some of our Level 2 and Level 3 Automotive students and their reasons for pursuing this industry.

We recently spoke to four of our Automotive students about what they’re working on at the start of the academic year, why they chose a Motor Vehicle course at EKC Canterbury College and their passion for the car industry.

Liam | Level 3 Diploma in Light Vehicle Maintenance and Repair Principles

Liam dreams of becoming a technician after finishing his course, a dream he has had since he was young.

When speaking about the Level 3 course, he said: “Today, we’re testing the fuelling injectors to see what issues there are. It’s more technical than something we would do in the Level 2.

“Level 2 is just trying to fix stuff; how to take stuff off, putting new bits in, whereas this is more like diagnosing issues.”

Kayle | Level 2 Diploma Light Vehicle Maintenance and Repair

Kayle is new to her Automotive studies but not new to the car industry. In her spare time, she fixes military vehicles with her family.

She said: “I think the facilities at College are absolutely brilliant. Everything’s here that you need. The staff are absolutely lovely.

“I want to join the Defence School of Electronic & Mechanical Engineering. With this course on the side, it helps as well because it gives me some knowledge around the industry.”

Craig and Tom | Level 3 Diploma in Light Vehicle Maintenance and Repair Principles

Craig and Tom have both had a fascination with cars for a long time. Craig has experience with cars, working alongside his father. Tom’s experience comes from his mother, who has worked in the car industry for a long time.

Craig said: “I’m not totally sure what I want to do next, but I have plans to eventually one day go to Australia because my brother is out there. I’m hoping this course will get me there.”

Tom’s favourite project so far has been to rebuild engines in the workshop in the Level 2 course, which gave him the chance to take an engine apart and then put it back together.

He said: “I’d like to go into doing MOT inspection and hopefully doing my Level 3 will help me be more on my way to do that.”
