Drama students from EKC Canterbury College can hear their voices on the radio after taking part in an exciting advert campaign.

Ten learners were given the inspiring opportunity to record a set of radio adverts with kmfm, Kent’s biggest radio station, for a new campaign being run by East Kent Colleges Group.

Yaz and Rhys, two of the students who took part in the campaign.

The recording sessions took place inside EKC Canterbury College’s state-of-the-art recording studio and were headed up by head of broadcast and kmfm breakfast presenter Rob Wills.

The exciting project meant 10 students met with Rob to record, with many of the learners describing the opportunity as unforgettable.

Student, Yas, explained: “It was really fun and a good new experience.

“It’s definitely given me a different perspective on things and got me thinking about what else is out there and different things you can do in the industry.

“Seeing Rob on the computer and taking on his advice was really cool, too. I never knew that this was how radio adverts were made.”

Fellow student, Rhys, added: “It was a great opportunity to give us an insight into what it might be like to do voice acting, and it really showed us how we can use our voice more. I’ll definitely take that on in my acting.

“I definitely want to have a look at voice acting now because that opportunity was so cool.”

The students involved in the sessions were all Level 3 Performing Arts (MAPA) students. The Marlowe Academy of Performing Arts (MAPA) programme is delivered in partnership between the Marlowe Theatre in Canterbury and East Kent Colleges Group.

Despite it being their first taste of professional voiceover work, the group impressed producers with confident and creative performances.

Several recordings have now been chosen for a campaign promoting College life and the benefits of further education.

The adverts are designed to show that college is a practical, career-focused route for young people, and an opportunity to turn their passions into professions.

Sarah Davies, drama lecturer at EKC Canterbury College, said: “It was fantastic to see our students flourish as they stepped into the studio to record radio ads with kmfm.

“They showed real enthusiasm, confidence and professionalism in the recording environment – qualities they’ve been developing throughout their MAPA course, and which shone through on the day.

“Opportunities like this are invaluable in helping our students grow, build industry-ready skills and feel prepared for life after college.

“Working directly with the kmfm team made the whole experience unforgettable.”

Listeners can hear some of the students’ work on kmfm over the coming months as the campaign rolls out across Kent.
