Academic Year kicked off with Freshers' Fayre 2024

11 September 2024
EKC Canterbury College has kicked off the academic year with Freshers' Fayre 2024, designed to welcome new and returning students.

EKC Canterbury College has kicked off the new academic year by inviting students to the Freshers’ Fayre. Held every September, this event transforms the campus into a hub of excitement, welcoming both new and returning students.

The event, which took place in ‘The Street’, featured stalls representing various student-led societies, local businesses, universities and support services. From enjoying a refreshing Bubble Tea made by Mooboo to learning about Higher Education from Canterbury Christ Church University, there was something for everyone to enjoy, and was a great opportunity for learners to get a taste of campus life.

New Students’ Union President Niamh Mccabe, has worked over the summer with Student Experience Officers Shannon Casey and Gina Bridgeman to create an unforgettable experience for all who attended. For Niamh, it was an extra-special event, as her first in her new role.

She said: “It’s gone really well. There’s lots of students here and I’m meeting all different types of people from across the College. I’ve even got some freebies for myself.”

She hopes to make the Student Union more representative of all subject areas over the next year, saying: “I’m hoping to get departments such as Inclusive Learning a bit more involved this year. I love learning about new people, and this is my fourth year now, so becoming SU President means I can really make a difference.”

One of the highlights of the Fayre was the live music stage, featuring performances from talented Music students, both in their first and second years.

First-year student Shakira, who has just started on their journey in Music Production said: “I’ve done something new entirely, getting into a band with people I don’t know. I chose the College as it’s so diverse and creative and it’s such a friendly place to be. Today has really shown that.”

Lulu is also in her first week of studies in Level 3 Music Production, saying: “Being able to perform at the Freshers Fayre and performing with new people has been amazing. I know the teachers put a lot of hard work and dedication into the course and I know that I’ve made the right choice for my future.”

The energetic atmosphere carried on throughout the day with a mix of tough challenges such as the Bucking Bronco, in which students had to stay on as long as they could. By the end of the day, the record was an impressive 67 seconds.

Destiny, who studies Games Design said of the challenge: “It was fun to challenge myself in front of my friends, I can’t believe I lasted 56 seconds, which seems incredible to me.

She also shared her experiences of College so far, saying: “I started last week and am loving it. I’ve done so much work already, learning how to use Adobe Illustrator and other apps. I wanted to explore a new area, and I’ve heard lots of good things about the College, especially as my sister came here.”

The College’s commitment to student wellbeing was also evident, with dedicated areas for mental health support, financial advice, and academic guidance. Representatives from local charities and volunteer organisations were also present, encouraging students to engage with their services.

Student Experience Officer Shannon was very proud of this community engagement, saying: “We’ve had so many organisations come in, it’s been so popular, and the students have loved having the information and guidance they need. This event is good for building connections and meeting new people, and for finding out more about the local services that can help you.”

As the day drew to a close, students left with armfuls of freebies, new friendships, and a sense of excitement for the year ahead. The success of the Freshers’ Fayre has set a positive tone for the upcoming academic year and has given learners an impressive introduction to College life as well as Students’ Union events.
