Game on! Creative Media students bring BitCrush Festival to life

10 December 2025
Our Creative Media students came together for host BitCrush Festival, a gaming and art festival raising money for Demelza.

BitCrush is an annual fundraising event for Demelza , it is run by the Creative Media department at EKC Canterbury College.

The Creative Media department were thrilled to host BitCrush again this year. The exciting event was open to both staff and students. It ran from December 2 to December 4 in The Street, the event celebrated the students’ hard work while raising money for charity.

Attendees enjoyed live performances by our talented Music students while exploring a variety of unique stalls. These featured Creative Media student-designed pin badges, retro gaming consoles, and action figures. All on sale with profits going directly to Demelza.

Debbie and Clyde ran the Demeza stall selling a range of games, consoles and plushies.

Our local Demelza charity shop, ran by Debbie, have been involved with the College’s festival since 2014. Each year they bring in a plethora of games, toys and consoles to be sold during BitCrush Festival. “It’s fantastic event to be a part of” commented Debbie.

“The students work really hard to organise the event. Every year we look forward to coming along to work with the students to raise money for Demelza. Some students go on to volunteer at the Demelza shop, I have seen shy, timid students grow into confident young people, it’s a brilliant partnership we have with the College.”

“Last year the total we raised during BitCrush was over £3,000, we hope to raise even more money this year!”

The event featured the BitCrush Arcade, with a range of classic games alongside titles created by Level 3 Games Design students. Festival attendees are encouraged to try out these innovative creations by the designers of the future and share their feedback on gameplay.

This year, we were also lucky enough to have some extra entertainment from Matthew, one of our talented Level 3 Game Design students, who hosted a magic stall at the event. He impressed both staff and students with his mind-blowing tricks.

Matthew amazed attendees with his impressive tricks.

Between amazing onlookers, we were able to chat to Matthew about the importance of BitCrush Festival, he explained: “BitCrush has so much to offer, from the artist row, where you can buy artwork from Creative Media students, to the games arcade.

“It’s a great opportunity for us to sell our work, and gain feedback on our games, whilst raising money for Demelza. It’s an amazing cause, and I’m really proud to help contribute towards the charity.”

The event raises money for Demelza; a charity which offers support to young people with serious and life-limiting health conditions, and their families. Since the event was first hosted in 2014, students have raised £34,780.63 for Demelza. That includes a whopping £3,376.20 collected this year across the three days!

What a fantastic event showcasing the talented students across our College whilst raising money for an incredible cause.
