Work placements play a vital role in helping our students progress through their course and preparing them for a successful future in their chosen field.

Jacob, a Level 3 Health and Social Care student, completed his work placement with Headway Kent, a charity who supports individuals who have been affected by a brain injury.

Thumbs up if you completed a successful work placement!

During his placement Jacob would interact with clients, make them drinks – apparently his tea is ‘legendary’ – and join in activities. Toward the end of his placement, Jacob was also given his own project to update the tech and ensure the laptops were fit for purpose.

Jacob commented: “I really wanted a placement where I could help people and leave a positive impact.

“My Grandma had a stroke so I knew how life changing this can be for someone. Since being here, I have gained so much knowledge about brain injuries and can speak to clients with much more confidence”

When asked about his placement Jacob shared: “I have learnt a lot about social skills, talking to people and I’ve gained so much confidence.

“I have also learnt that a disability doesn’t define you. There are so many Headway members that are so inspiring. One of my favourite memories is playing cards with the clients, it was always such a laugh.”

University is on the horizon for Jacob now he has finished his course and his work placement with Headway. He is looking to study Biology, taking the knowledge about brain injuries with him.

Jacob has promised to continue volunteering with the charity alongside his lectures; demonstrating both his commitment to helping others and the positive impact of his work placement experience.

The charity commented that Jacob will leave ‘a real and lasting impact’ and mentioned how he brought ‘energy, kindness and an eagerness to learn from his very first day’.

Fantastic work Jacob, we wish you the very best of luck for your future. Thank you to Headway Kent for facilitating this placement, we will look forward to working with you in the future.
