Students at EKC Canterbury College got a close-up look at potential career opportunities at the Engineering and Automotive Trade Fair.

Staff from our Engineering, Manufacturing and Automotive department recently teamed up with employers to encourage students to begin thinking about their future and the potential career paths available to them.

With a variety of employers and training providers onsite, students had the chance to talk to those already working within the industry, hear more about employers and learn about exciting progression routes.

Event organiser and Industry Liaison Officer for the department, Louise Sutcliffe said:; “It was positive to see students engaging with employers, discussing industry placements, employer opportunities and future career paths.”

With companies such as the Port of Dover, Amey and Ford Pro in attendance, students were encouraged to learn about the broad ways in which Engineering and Automotive skills are utilised within different sectors.

Melanie Rogers, Social Value Manager from Amey commented: “These events are a great way to encourage students to explore different career opportunities, many of which they may not have thought of. There are often so many more directions a student can go in their career that they may not be aware of. So, I’d encourage students to talk to every single company to learn what they do and what they can offer.”

The event was a success, leaving many students inspired and visiting companies happy with the engagement and conversations that were sparked throughout the day, with Alex Bates from Breheny Civil Engineering adding:

“We’re really grateful for events like these, as they give us the perfect opportunity to talk to students and hear what kind of things they’re learning at college. That allows us to reflect and cater our training and the Apprenticeships we offer to build on the skills they’re learning at college.”
