Students shine during unique photoshoot experience at Winters Barn

12 February 2026
EKC Canterbury College photography and hair and media make-up students take part in a professional wedding photoshoot at Winters Barn.

Recently, Winters Barn welcomed EKC Canterbury College students for an exciting professional collaboration, designed to enhance students’ specialised skills while supporting local wedding suppliers through a complimentary photoshoot opportunity.

The day saw students working collaboratively in small groups, taking on different roles throughout the photoshoot. The Level 3 Theatrical Hair and Media Make-up students prepared the models, whilst the Level 3 Photography students captured portraits and photographed wedding related products.

Local florists, jewellers, a bridal boutique and vintage wedding car providers: DLG Wedding Cars, also joined the experience, adding an authentic feel to the day.

The aim was for students to gain experience of running a professional photoshoot, thinking creatively, directing models and problem-solving while working with clients. It offered a rare and invaluable insight into working within the wedding sector, an opportunity that doesn’t come around often.

One standout moment came as the impressive wedding cars slowly rolled into the venue. Excitement spread instantly, with students already imagining creative ways to incorporate the vehicles into their shots.

Once the models were in position, the students pulled out their cameras and started shooting. They had some distinctive ideas, capturing reflections in the cars wing mirrors and drawing heart shapes in the condensation on the windows. The atmosphere was electric as Photography students confidently guided the models, bringing their ideas to life through the lens.

Hair and Media Make-Up students were tasked with preparing the models for the photoshoot, creating two distinctly different looks. The first was a soft, natural style, featuring subtle make-up paired with sleek, flowing hair. The second look allowed students to turn up the glamour, with bold make-up and a breathtaking up-do that truly stole the spotlight.

Throughout the day, Photography students captured a wide range of shots, having to think carefully about how to work with the different lighting around the venue. Adapting their camera modes constantly to ensure they capture a perfect shot.

Our young photographers were able to make full use of Winters Barn’s beautiful spaces including outdoor areas adorned with fairy lights and vibrant greenery; and both the ceremony room and the wedding breakfast room, dressed and ready for a special day. Shooting products with the venue’s charm and character as the backdrop really helped the students to elevate the composition of their images.

Level 3 Photography student, Felicity, was thrilled to take part in the shoot.

During the shoot we spoke to Felicity, a current a Level 3 Photography student who has dreams of being a professional landscape Photographer after completing her College course. She explained: “This shoot will help build my portfolio and shows that I’ve done something similar to a wedding. Weddings are more planned, so you have to go with the flow rather than directing everything.

“Although, having work like this shows people my style, how I edit, and my final outcomes. With photography, I love that you can create whatever you want without someone telling you what to do.”

This is a fantastic example of how we give our students unique experiences that help them build a strong portfolio to support their future beyond College. The day also gave students the opportunity to explore career paths within their chosen subject areas, sparking new interests for many.

Overall, it was a highly successful event that inspired students to raise their aspirations and gain practical skills while strengthening their portfolios.
