On Saturday 11 May, the Landbased, Environmental and Animal Care department at EKC Canterbury College hosted the annual Spring Fayre, a celebration of education, sustainability, wildlife and community. This year’s event, held at the purpose-built landbased campus, welcomed visitors to explore the newly renovated facilities while enjoying various activities and attractions.
Spring Fayre hosted a range of activities for visitors of all ages, including bug displays, animal unit tours, family activities, craft sales and interactive science demonstrations.
Learners from across the College came together to contribute to the event, utilising their own skills to enhance the event. Theatrical Media Makeup students brought face paints, creating popular animal designs from tigers to spiders. Visual Art students curated a wildlife-themed art exhibition, drawing on work developed from collaborations with local animal organisations, including The Wildwood Trust and Wingham Wildlife Park. Throughout the day, visitors could enjoy refreshments and relax in the sun while listening to acoustic sets provided by solo singers and bands from our Music department.
Rob Pickup, Head of Landbased, Environment and Animal Care, said: “Our team were very happy with the event, and it was fantastic to see so many local organisations, community members and families enjoying the day. It was great to have the opportunity to open our doors to residents of Canterbury and beyond and really show off what Spring Lane has to offer, both from an educational perspective and the work we are doing to promote wildlife and sustainability.”
In addition to the family-fun activities, a craft and plant sale meant that green-thumbed visitors could pick out new plants and receive expert advice on caring for them. All proceeds went towards Perennial, the UK’s only charity dedicated to helping people in horticulture. Charities and organisations dedicated to animal welfare and conservation showcased their initiatives, inspiring attendees to become advocates for environmental protection, including the Dogs Trust and Guardian Angels.
