Ten female students from the Level 2 and Level 3 Public Services programs recently spent an action-packed week with the Royal Engineers at Gibraltar Barracks, experiencing what it’s like to be part of military life.

Organised by the Public Services department in collaboration with the Royal Engineers, the Female Look at Life program aimed to inspire young women to explore careers within the Royal Engineers, build teamwork and communication skills and raise confidence levels.

Throughout the week, students stayed in barracks accommodation, experiencing military routines and learning about the diverse roles within the Royal Engineers. Each day had a dedicated focus, seeing the learners creating bridges and rafts, all culminating in a competition that took place around the island.

They also travelled to Chatham and Brompton Barracks to learn about different types of engineering trades and specialisms.

In addition to specialised skills sessions, students took part in command and military tasks, command training exercises, and challenging night walks, which built team spirit and honed their communication and team-building skills.

One student on the day said: “It’s a really enjoyable trip that gives you the perfect insight into every aspect of the Royal Engineers. It also gives you a chance to connect with friends and meet new people!”

Another said: “This was such an amazing trip with fun-filled days learning about life within the Royal Engineers. You learn a lot and it is all together a great environment.”

The trip not only provided a deep dive into life in the Royal Engineers but also built lasting friendships and professional connections among participants.

One of the Level 3 Learners said:  “I loved exploring different options and pathways for the future, but you also make strong connections with other students who you had barely spoken to before. The activities were also incredible as it gave you a good insight into what the jobs are really like.”

The week concluded with students feeling inspired, informed, and empowered, thanks to Sarah and the team of Royal Engineers who guided them through the unforgettable experience.

With the success of this year’s Female Look at Life week, the programme has been a great opportunity for young women to explore a career in Engineering and the Public Services.
