Starting University is an exciting time but can also be a bit overwhelming. But there are lots of things you can do over the summer to prepare.

Starting University is an exciting time but can also be a bit overwhelming. The transition to learning and living on your own is a big change. But don’t stress. There are lots of things you can do over the summer to prepare.

Practice your cooking skills

Cooking is an important life skill to have especially if you are heading into self-catered accommodation. What better time to learn some recipes?

If you have little or no experience in the kitchen, spend some time over the summer learning quick and easy recipes. You can find recipes on YouTube and TikTok, or by asking family or friends at home to teach you.

Living with other students gives you the opportunity to share ideas and cook meals together, so if you’re not feeling too confident in the kitchen it’s a great way to develop your skills.

Research student life

The University experience is so much more than lectures and seminars. To make the most of your time at University, consider getting involved in a club, society, or volunteering group, or join a sports team.

Not only is engaging in extra-curricular activities the perfect way to have fun, explore hobbies, and make new friends, but you will also develop valuable skills which will look great on your cv.

Connect

Join Facebook groups and forums, or check out your University’s social media to find students to connect with. This is a great way to meet people and make friends before you arrive, and to get some tips from current students.

Pack

Before you start packing, take the time to consider what type of living situation you will be in. Think about what you will need to make your new home comfortable and functional, whether you’re in catered or self-catered accommodation.

Focus on the essentials like bedding, clothing, crockery, cutlery, and kitchenware, as well as personal items to make your new place feel like home. Food and toiletries can be bought once you arrive.

Lastly Relax and Have Fun

Remember to enjoy your summer!

For many of you, heading off to University will be your first time away from home. So, whatever you do this summer, make sure to spend some quality time with your loved ones.
