The Students’ Union Drag Show celebrates diversity, self-expression, and creativity within our College community. It has undoubtedly become an EKC Canterbury College tradition, entertaining hundreds of students each year. This year’s event was fiercer than ever, bringing new and returning Drag Queens to our stage.
We’re now spilling the beans on some unconventional yet fabulous makeup tips straight from the pros. Get ready to dive into the world of Drag Queens Janet District Council and Cigarette Salad, who we spoke to behind the scenes.
Janet District Council’s Eyelash Volumising:
Ever wondered how to make your eyes pop on stage? Janet District Council uses bright bold eyeliner (and lots of it) as well as huge eyelashes to give her look the edge. Inspired by Trixie Mattel’s makeup, she sticks multiple eyelashes together before applying them, to make the eyes appear bigger and brighter.
Her secret for how they stay in place? Wig bonding glue.
Janet said of her technique: “All it takes is a little dab of glue on the base of the eyelash set and then you can gently apply it way above the eye. Your eyelashes will remain stuck throughout the entire performance, and you don’t have to worry about them falling off.”
After each use, she recommends gently cleaning off the old makeup from your eyelashes. This will help ensure that they don’t get crusty and that when you use them again, the new makeup is easy to apply.
Cigarette Salad’s Experimentation
Cigarette Salad brought a riot of colours and creativity to the stage. Embracing heavy makeup for the spotlight, Cigarette recommends stocking up on brands such as Beauty Bay with their bright cream colours. Did you know that it doesn’t have to break the bank?
Cigarette swears by the inexpensive brands, saying “I would recommend drugstore makeup as it is often just as good as the expensive brands. If you’re getting into drag, it’s nice to try and mix things up and experiment as you go with cheaper makeup.”
For her final looks, Cigarette stood out by using a Beauty Bay ‘Midnight’ palette, with the pinks and whites creating a bold look.
Eyeliner pens don’t have to be for just the eyes. Cigarette also used one to paint her lips and draw on a cross, a moustache and winged eyebrows in her final look. Using makeup for lots of different application is just one way that you can make getting into drag even cheaper.
