Level 2 Construction explore their careers with Cardo

EKC Canterbury College recently welcomed Cardo, to deliver an inspiring talk to Level 2 Electrical and Carpentry students.

EKC Canterbury College recently welcomed representatives from Cardo Group, a leading provider of high-quality building maintenance and retrofit services, to deliver an inspiring talk to Level 2 Electrical and Carpentry students.

The session focused on career pathways, Cardo’s company services, and the work placement programme they offer, which supports projects for Canterbury City Council and surrounding boroughs.

Students also got the chance to meet one of Cardo’s apprentices, who shared his experiences of securing a job and developing his career.

“It was good to meet an apprentice and hear their journey to getting a job,” said Level 2 Electrical student, Luke Browne. “The fact that he is our age and how he’d progressed showed us that any of us can do it, like he did. It was useful hearing how we can look in our own areas for contractors who might take on students for placements—I didn’t know that before.”

Cardo’s Social Value Manager, Neal Allison, provided further insights, explaining what it takes to apply for a placement or apprenticeship, and highlighting the opportunities available: “For work placements, students still go through a standard process with us, as if they were applying for any job.

“We find that students really value the placement once they get accepted, and we can provide them with real onsite experience to develop their skills.”

The visit reinforced to all the learners the importance of soft skills and professional preparation. “Hearing first-hand from the employer about the skills students need and what is expected of them was brilliant”, said Electrical Lecturer, Jay Day. “Explaining to them how their social media presence feeds into their job applications was also useful.”

Carpentry Lecturer, Darron Hughes, added: “Cardo’s talk was really useful and gave our students some good ideas about what they, as an employer, are looking for.”

Opportunities like this one means that studying at EKC Canterbury College ensures students gain practical knowledge, connect with industry leaders, and are inspired to pursue their future careers with confidence.
