EKC Canterbury College Landbased students donate school uniforms to South African Children

15 May 2025
Animal Science and Wildlife Conservation students have donated free school uniforms to children in a South African village.

Animal Science and Wildlife Conservation students from EKC Canterbury College donated free school uniforms to children in a South African village, during this year’s safari trip.

The project, led entirely by our students, focused on supporting access to education for young people. In many areas of South Africa, children must have a school uniform in order to attend school. Uniforms help to create a sense of equality and belonging for the children, but for many families, the cost can be a barrier. By collecting and donating uniforms, our students aimed to give more children the opportunity to learn and succeed.

Our learners took charge of this social action project, from gathering the uniforms in the UK to organising how they would be delivered. Before their trip, they worked together to sort and pack each item, ready to be handed over during their visit.

Once in South Africa, they were able to see their project come full circle. As part of their learning experience, they also organised a small event to present the uniforms to the charity ‘African Insight’, which help distribute the clothing to families in need. The handover was a proud moment for them all, and photos from the visit show the children smiling in their new uniforms.

This project gave our learners a chance to connect with the global community and to take part in something with lasting impact.

Many have described it as one of the most meaningful parts of their trip and the department is now preparing to continue this initiative.
