Creative and Design Department Launches “Artist Talk Series” with Renowned Professionals

13 November 2024
Students gain exclusive insights and mentorship through a new series of Artist Talks with Creative leaders, starting with Stephen Foy Philp.

The Creative and Design department has launched an exciting new initiative for students – a series of Artist Talks designed to connect emerging talent with accomplished professionals from across the creative sector. The series aims to inspire, educate, and provide industry advice to students as they prepare for careers in the arts.

Stephen Foy Philp kicked off the first session, talking students through his journey from education to established Multimedia Artist.

The Multimedia Artist shared his interest in Anthropology and how he weaves different narratives into his creative process, offering students an in-depth look into the realities of a thriving creative career.

Foy Philp, who is most known for his innovative work in interactive art and installation projects, shared some of his career highlights including illustrating the children’s book, Hervé the Campsite Cat by Penelope Reilly, being offered an artist’s residency at The Ashford School and his most recent exhibition, ‘Of Course’, that was displayed at Coachworks Ashford and part of OA24. The interactive installation saw a variety of tigers scattered around a miniature golf course. Stephen explained to the students that this piece had evolved from his interest in predators and how something inherently dangerous can be recreated into something lovable.

The artist’s key messaging for students was the value of actively engaging with the creative community. He encouraged students to be present, stay informed about available resources—such as community workshops, facilities, and exhibitions—and take every opportunity to connect with fellow artists.

By participating and observing, he explained, artists can learn from one another, gaining insights and inspiration that only come from genuine connections and shared experiences.

When asked what advice he would give emerging young talent, he said: “Just remember your work is constantly developing. Whether it’s your creative style, or the themes of your work, you continue evolving.

“Make sure you don’t restrict yourself by assuming you know enough – you don’t. You never stop learning so embrace new things and new challenges and constantly seek out new opportunities.”

Other creatives the students will have the opportunity to engage with during the series of talks include Bea Hurst, Charlotte Chapman, Billy Moon, and Sadie Hennessey. Each speaker will provide not only insight into their own experiences but practical advice to help students navigate the competitive and ever-evolving creative industry.
