Benefits of Work Experience

We've put together the top reasons why taking part in industry placements are beneficial to you, and what you can get out of these experiences.

During your course you will be expected to complete a set number of work placement hours within the industry.

Not only will this give you the chance to put your skills to practice in a working environment, but gaining work experience also helps to: 

Develops Workplace Awareness 

Work experience exposes you to different work environments, helping you to understand the demands and expectations of various careers, and prepares you for the expectations of the workplace as you begin your career journey. 

Owen Drake worked at Barretts BMW during his placement, carrying out a wide range of tasks, including checking vehicles for wear and tear, repairing rear cameras and visual health checks at the well-known new and used car dealership. He added:  “I have gained so much expert knowledge at Barretts. I really enjoy working on the vehicles in the workshop and test driving them.”   

Builds Transferable Skills

You will acquire practical skills that can be useful in any job, such as time management, organisation, and communication. 

Provides Opportunities for Paid Positions

Many of our students have shone during their work placements, impressing the employer so much that they’ve been offered permanent, paid work alongside and after their placement has ended. This could be your stepping stone to a successful career. 

Helps Assemble Networks

You will connect with professionals, potential mentors, colleagues, and employers, expanding your professional network. 

T Level Health student, Georgina Moore, spent time working in the Medical Day Unit at East Kent Hospitals NHS University Foundation Trust, shadowing and supporting with a variety of areas within the ward and working with consultants, specialist nurses and patients. Not only has she been introduced to a variety of different professionals and mentors, by working in the team she realised “the NHS is where I want to be.” 

Increases Self-Confidence, Maturity, and Independence

Facing real-world challenges during work experience will help develop confidence within yourself and your technical skills.
