Community Week is an ongoing commitment where students and staff from across the College take part in social action projects.
It is a wonderful opportunity for students to use the skills they have learnt or are currently learning by putting them into practice to help the local community.
Let’s take a look at some of the things that the College has been doing this week:
Foundation Learning | Maintaining Hambrook Marshes
Foundation Learning and ESOL students have been working with Love Hambrook Marshes to litter pack, cut shrubs and plants and spruce up Hambrook Marshes for future visitors.
As part of this, they have also been cutting back shrubs on one of the main banks, so that when the warmer weather comes, the lizards, slow worms and grass snakes have a clear area to come out on to after hibernation.
This is a continuation of a partnership between the College and Love Hambrook Marshes, as the fourth year that students have set out to make this green space inviting for all.
Public Services | Remembrance Parade
Public Services students led a two minute’s silence on the campus for Remembrance Day.
They took part in a drill march and stood to attention, with Lecturer Trevor James reading the poem ‘In Flanders Fields’ to mark the start and end of the two minutes silence.
Students and staff from across the College were in attendance to mark their respects and pay tributes.
Plumbing | Decorations for Community Christmas Fayre
Plumbing have been working together to make Christmas Trees out of old copper pipes, for this year’s College Christmas Fayre.
Bending, Soldering and Planning were key components of this project, showcasing the importance of teamwork.
Their centrepiece was a 5ft tree, which will stand proud in ‘The Street’ on campus, alongside smaller trees created as table decorations.
For Level 3 Apprentices, Leo McIntyre and Liam Keating, this has been a great chance to put all their skills to work.
Leo said of the activity: “I’ve really enjoyed working with Liam. As plumbers we often work on our own tasks, so it’s been nice getting involved in something communal and working with other people.”
Liam added: “It’s been a good way to put the skills we’ve been learning into practice. We’ve made a few mistakes along the way, but it’s nice to have the chance to look at the work and rectify it without the pressures of it being an assessed project.”
College Services | Community Week Christmas Sale
Our very own College Services team have been supporting Bridge Haven Care Home, with a Christmas Sale in ‘The Street’.
Selling handmade crafts, homemade jams, cakes, sweet treats, party wear and wreaths. it was a great opportunity for staff and students to buy gifts whilst supporting a great course.
It has been great to see so many projects happening this Community Week, with some to develop further over the coming weeks and months.
