Course overview


If you enjoy working with your hands, building things, and seeing your ideas
come to life, this course is a great place to start. The Level 2 Diploma in
Carpentry and Joinery is designed to help you develop practical skills and take
your first steps towards a career in the construction industry.


You will spend most of your time learning in our industry-standard workshops,
where you’ll use real tools and materials just like professionals do on site.
With guidance from experienced tutors, you’ll build your confidence as you learn
how to measure, cut, shape and assemble wood to create high-quality structures
and finished pieces.


Throughout the course, you will develop a wide range of skills, including
working safely, using and maintaining tools, and completing key carpentry tasks
such as door hanging, fixing skirting boards and building stud walls. You will
also learn how buildings are put together, helping you understand not just how
to do the job, but why it’s done that way in industry.


This course is ideal for students who have completed a Level 1 course or have
some basic experience and are ready to take the next step. It’s also designed to
support your wider development, helping you build confidence, teamwork skills
and a strong work ethic, all qualities that employers look for in the
construction sector.


You’ll have opportunities to take part in industry-related experiences,
including work placements, site visits and skills competitions, giving you a
real insight into what it’s like to work in the trade.

Course information


This course is designed to introduce you to the essential skills needed for a
career in woodwork and carpentry. You will gain experience in a range of
practical tasks, helping you build confidence while developing the knowledge and
techniques used in the construction industry.


Throughout the course, you will cover key areas including:



  • Health and Safety in Construction – understanding how to work safely and
    responsibly in a workshop and on site

  • Basic Tool Skills and Maintenance – learning how to use, care for and
    maintain a wide range of hand and power tools

  • Setting Out Joists and Trusses – developing accuracy when measuring and
    preparing structural components

  • Stud Partitioning – constructing internal framework walls used in
    buildings

  • Fixing Skirting and Architrave – completing interior finishing work to a
    professional standard

  • Door Hanging – fitting doors correctly, including alignment and
    adjustments

  • Fixing Locks – installing basic locking systems and hardware

  • Manufacturing Basic Joinery Items – creating practical wooden items using
    your developing skills

You will spend most of your time learning in our well-equipped,
industry-standard workshops, where you’ll practise these skills in a supportive
and realistic environment. As your confidence grows, you will take on more
complex tasks that reflect real-life carpentry work.


In addition to your practical learning, you will have the opportunity to take
part in national skills competitions such as KFE4Skills and contribute to community projects. These
experiences will help you apply your skills in real-world settings, build your
confidence and develop teamwork and problem-solving abilities valued by
employers.
