Course overview

Turn your love of cars into a rewarding career. When you join us your skills as a mechanic will grow as you learn in our impressive purpose-built automotive garage.

This course will introduce you to all the basics, from routine vehicle inspection, to fitting, maintenance, and diagnostics. You will build the skills and confidence to independently diagnose and rectify common automotive issues.

This course is suitable for students who have achieved a 4/C grade in English and Maths. If you have not yet achieved this grade you will need to complete the course over two years. This provides you with additional time to achieve a Level 2 in English and/or Maths, with additional trips, activities, employer engagement opportunities.

Course information

On this course, you’ll explore what a future career in the automotive sector could look like. From diagnosing faults and fixing common mechanical issues to understanding new electrical vehicle technologies, you’ll build the skills and confidence employers value.

This practical course is designed to prepare you for a professional automotive environment. You’ll train in our purpose-built garage, working on real cars using professional-grade tools and equipment, such as vehicle lifts, Snap-On and Milwaukee tools and OBD scanners.

You’ll be supported throughout the course by expert tutors, who have previously worked in the industry. They will guide you through both the theory and practical elements of the programme. You’ll learn how to safely operate required machinery, how newer electric and hybrid vehicles work, and you will develop your mechanical skills using various hand and electric tools.

During the course, you’ll study key modules including:
• Health and safety in the workplace
• Basic tool skills and maintenance
• Customer service within the industry
• Engine lubrication, cooling and fuel systems
• Chassis systems (brakes, steering and suspension)
• Electric engines
• Body electrical systems
• Hybrid vehicles
• Engine training rigs

Alongside your studies, you’ll complete a tailored work experience placement with a leading industry specialist. Our dedicated Industry Liaison Officers will support you to find a placement that matches your interests and career goals.
