Course overview

Our Level 2 Diploma in Engineering course specialising in fabrication and welding is designed to give you a solid foundation in practical metalwork skills, along with the theory you need to work safely and effectively.

This course is designed for those wishing to build on introductory skills acquired at Level 1, or those with previous industry experience. This two-year programme provides additional time to achieve a Level 2 in English and/or Maths, with additional trips, activities, employer engagement opportunities.

Course information

On this course, you’ll explore what a future career in fabrication welding could look like. You’ll learn processes using MIG/MAG welding, using fabrication tools such as grinders and drills and learn about machining techniques. Throughout the course, you’ll build the skills and confidence employers value.

This project-based course is designed to prepare you for a professional engineering environment. You’ll train in our purpose-built welding workshop, using industry-standard tools and machines to bring your projects to life.

You’ll be supported throughout the course by expert tutors who will guide you through both the theory and practical elements. You’ll learn how to safely operate machinery and develop your skills using welding tools, helping you grow in confidence as you progress.

During the course, you’ll study key modules including:
• Health and safety and tool maintenance
• Understanding the mechanical engineering environment
• Developing engineering knowledge, including interpreting drawings and understand different metals and their properties
• Practical fabrication and welding skills, including preparing materials and joining metal components

Alongside your studies, you’ll complete a tailored work experience placement with a leading industry specialist. Our dedicated Industry Liaison Officers will match you with a placement that supports your interests and career goals, with many students going on to secure paid work as a result.

To support your learning, you’ll have access to our specially designed centre for engineering, with equipment including robot arms, milling machinery and welding bays. These industry-focused spaces are designed to help you develop the skills, confidence, and experience needed to succeed in the engineering industry.
