A Level in Music

For an A Level programme of study, we require students to have a range of at least five to seven GCSE passes at grade 5 or higher, including a minimum of a 4 in English and Mathematics, but students must also satisfy the minimum entry criteria for A Level Music below.

• Grade 4 in GCSE English Language and English Literature

And

• Grade 5 in Theory of Music (or proven ability you can fluently read music)

And

• Grade 5 in Instrument or vocal (or passing a College audition)

Although useful, previous study of music is not essential but students taking this course should be at least Grade 5 standard on an instrument or voice. Students who have not taken a graded exam will be able to perform at an audition. Study of the Theory of Music is essential before starting this course. Students who do not have Grade 5 Theory of Music will take a theory test prior to enrolment to demonstrate that they can read music fluently.

You will take part in three externally assessment examinations. One will be a solo recital performance, one will be a composition and there will be one final written paper.

You can progress on to many undergraduate degree programmes in Higher Education, specialist Music College. You may wish to be pursuing a career as a freelance musician, music teacher or in sound production or composition.

There are no fees for this course if you are under 18.

There will be opportunities to work with the Music and Performing Arts departments at Canterbury College on combined projects.

The college has great facilities for music students, including practice rooms, each containing a piano, and recording studios.

What subjects are commonly studied with Music?

Music combines well with a variety of different subjects demonstrating a breadth of talent and academic knowledge.

Students commonly choose to study Drama and Theatre, Fine Art, Business, English Literature and humanities subjects such as History and Classical Civilisation.
