A Level in Drama and Theatre

For an A Level programme of study, we require students to have a range of at least five to seven GCSE passes at grade 5 or higher, including a minimum of a 4 in English and Mathematics, but students must also satisfy the minimum entry criteria for A Level Drama and Theatre below.

• Grade 5 in GCSE English Language and English Literature

Although useful, it is not necessary to have previously studied Drama; however, experience of acting plus an interest in the academic study of Drama and Theatre is necessary and will be explored at interview with a further practical assessment at induction.

You will complete two written examinations and two practical examinations – a devised piece and a scripted piece. You will complete accompanying coursework in your second year.

You will get to attend various theatre trips, both local and national, including Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre. You will be expected to attend at least two of these annually.

We have a partnership with The Marlowe Theatre, so you will get many opportunities to gain experience in this professional setting.

There are no fees for this course if you are under 18.

You will be expected to join us on at least two visits to the theatre. This is an essential part of the course and plays a key role in helping you to appreciate the theatrical experience.

What subjects are commonly studied with Drama and Theatre

This subject goes well with English Literature, and many students go on to a combined degree courses in English and Drama.

Drama and Theatre also complements a wide range of other subjects, such as Law, Politics, Classical Civilisation, Music, Fine Art or Textiles. Psychology and Sociology are also good subjects due to many transferable skills in performance, organisation and analysis.
