EKC Canterbury College unites local SEND providers, families and young people at Progression Fair

19 November 2025
The College brought together local SEND providers, families, and community partners for a vibrant progression fair celebrating future pathways for young people.

Recently, we hosted a progression fair for Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) learners. The fair invited young people, their parents and carers, and local SEND educational provisions to explore their progression options from school, College and beyond.

The Main Hall was a hive of activity as young people interacted with the stall holders finding out more about their next steps. One EKC Canterbury College learner, Becky, told us about her experience: “I have spoken to lots of people here. They have some fun things I could do after College. The best part was the fidget toys I was given!”

There was a plethora of stalls for learners to interact with, from Supported Internships – EKC Training where learners can gain experience in a work place, to local charities that provide unique workshops and experiences to adults with learning disabilities. The range of activities available for these individuals was fantastic to see, learners confidently engaged with the stall holders and enjoyed helping themselves to information about the provisions. (As well as a few freebies!)

During the fair, we spoke to stall holder Vicki Wilks from Learning Disability Support – East Kent Mencap.  They have various activities on offer for individuals with learning disabilities, their weekly timetable includes cooking, karaoke and horse riding.

Vicki commented: “Over the years we have been to three fairs here at the College, this is certainly the busiest I have seen it. It is great to see that the College has invited a range of local schools, young people and parent and carers here today.

“It has been fantastic to have the opportunity to talk to learners, and their responsible adults, to tell them about the activities we offer.”

Overall, the event was a great success, giving our SEND learners, as well as individuals with learning disabilities from the wider community, the chance to explore future pathways, and feel inspired about the opportunities available to them. It was fantastic to see their confidence grow as they explore the fair and to see their excitement about what lies ahead.
