Level 2 Diploma in Public Services (Two Year)

Designed as an introduction, this programme is the perfect way to develop your skills and prepare for progression onto a Level 3 course, which can lead to advanced jobs, university or apprenticeships.

This two-year programme provides additional time to achieve a Level 2 in English and/or Maths, with additional trips, activities, employer engagement opportunities.

This pathway gives you time to develop skills in your chosen area and improve your English and maths to a grade 4 or equivalent. Reaching this level will help you have more opportunities in the future, like getting a skilled job, an apprenticeship, or moving on to a Level 3 course.

To join this programme, you’ll need the equivalent of 4 GCSEs at grades 2 to 1, including English and maths at Level 1 or higher.

You will be assessed through multiple projects that will build your skills. You will complete group projects, presentations and written assignments, whilst also showcasing the skills you’ve learnt within practical activities. Your performance will also be observed and evaluated during practical tasks and exercises.

This approach allows you to demonstrate both your knowledge and your ability to apply it in realistic scenarios, helping you prepare for the demands of the public services.

This course is designed to prepare you for your next step.

After completing Level 2, you can progress onto a Level 3 Public Services course or a related pathway, where you’ll develop more advanced skills and move closer to your chosen career.

You could go on to explore careers in areas such as:
• Police
• Fire and rescue services
• Armed forces
• Prison services
• Emergency services
• Border Force

You may also decide to step straight into an entry-level job in the public service sector. Entry-level roles could include Civil Services Administrator, Welfare Assistant or Traffic Warden.

During the course you will have the chance to take part in lots of exciting trips and projects. From visiting the British Army, Royal British Legion and Kent Fire and Rescue, there’s always opportunities for you to continue learning outside of the classroom.

Gain behind-the-scenes insights of how public service organisations function as you take part in exciting industry trips and projects throughout the year. And gain a front row seat to a range of expert talks, where you will meet people from the sector who can help you grow your skillset and your network.

Put your fitness levels to the test with regular exercise and navigation challenges and take part in regular army-drills, developing the discipline and ability to respond under pressure needed for employment within the forces.

You will have the unique opportunity to take part in exciting residential trips, and to represent EKC Canterbury College at skills competitions. In previous years, students have taken home gold against MidKent and NorthKent College’s at the KFE4Skills competition. Students successfully showcased their fitness, team work, drill and command, and navigation skills to a high level.

You will also step into the realities of the sector, as you take part in simulated emergency response calls and crime scene re-enactments. You will take on the role of first responders, taking control of the scene, tending to patients and uncovering any further hazards.

Additional Work Experience projects will be supported by our Industry Liaison Officer, who will find exciting opportunities that are right for you and your interests.

Due to the nature of our Public Services course, we run a one-day Interview Day which all applicants must attend. The interview day will test your suitability for the course against aspects of the Public Services industry and give you an insight into student life. After successfully completing the interview day, you will be invited to enrol.

You may be required to pay for uniform and a trips fund so that you can get the most out of this course. Additional details and full costs can be discussed at interview.
