As a core part of their studies, Foundation Learning students take part in many enriching activities that enhance their personal, social, and employability skills. From creative workshops to making a real difference in the community with conservation efforts, here are five activities you could take part in while studying a Foundation Learning course:
Learning About Social Issues
You could get involved with local charities like Porchlight, an organisation dedicated to ending homelessness.
Students recently created masks to symbolise mental health conditions as part of the experience and attended talks to enhance their own understanding about these critical social issues.
By taking part in these activities, you’ll contribute to raising awareness of important topics.
Developing Green Skills
If you love nature, you could work with the White Cliffs Countryside Partnership to help create and restore wildlife habitats.
You’ll also participate in surveys to monitor local wildlife, contributing to essential conservation efforts. Last year, students surveyed all the different types of reptiles that call the White Cliffs home and learned more about their habitats.
You could also volunteer in conservation work to develop practical skills.
At Hambrook Marshes as part of the last Community Week, students assisted with taming the overgrown nature on the walking trails. They cleared bushes, collected litter, and documented the creatures there, to improve the area for visitors.

Supporting local projects
Getting involved in local projects means making a real difference to your community.
In a recent social action project at the Stream Walk Community Garden, students cleared old plant beds and prepared spaces for new fruits and vegetables. They also learned about composting and the importance of recycling organic materials to reduce waste and nourish plants.

By working with charities, you’ll see the vital role they play in supporting the community. At Whitstable Foodbank, students gained first-hand experience of the operations that keep the foodbank running. They helped unpack donations, organise supplies, and prepare delivery packages for those in need.

If you have an interest in wildlife, you could volunteer at businesses like Wildwood in Herne Bay.
Students there have helped prepare a new wildlife area to educate visitors about creating wildlife-friendly gardens.
This practical project gave them hands-on experience in gardening, customer service, and project management.
Exploring your creativity
On our courses, you’ll explore creative subject areas in small groups, including Performing Arts.
Recently, learners participated in a round-robin drama workshop at The Marlowe Theatre, gaining insights into how actors collaborate to create a successful show.
They also enjoyed a behind-the-scenes look at the theatre industry, learning about different roles in production and asking questions to industry experts.

Art and Design is also another area you’ll explore as a Foundation Learning student.
Our students have taken part in many activities, including attending a pottery workshop led by the Canterbury Archaeological Trust, learning various techniques to create pots. This activity combined their creative exploration with their interest to learn more about local history.
They also work with the University of Creative Arts (UCA), for mindfulness workshops with clay, where you’ll project thoughts and feelings into your creations.
Our learners enjoyed this session and also experimented with light photography, learning how to capture stunning visuals and express themselves with the medium of photography.

Discovering your next steps
On the course, you’ll have the opportunity to explore your next steps, including further studies at College or University.
You’ll also explore more subject areas such as Construction and Music. Foundation Learning students continue to take part in a wide variety of activities during their time with us, and these will build your confidence and make a positive impact along the way.
Our dedicated support team are also here to enable your progression, and to enable you to make connections with industry and educational partners.
