Canterbury College holds Celebration of Achievement Awards

The College’s annual Celebration of Achievement awards, which recognises outstanding students for their academic or personal achievements during their time at College, took place last week (29th June 2017).

Students’ Union President Jessica Foster and Elliot Lawson presented the ceremony, in which over 30 students received awards after being nominated by their tutors. Over 100 guests included parents, sponsors, employers, the Mayor and Mayoress of Canterbury and several council leaders.

Each year, students and staff from various departments pull together to ensure the success of the evening, and this year guests were offered reception drinks and canapés made and served by Catering and Hospitality students. Our guest speaker was Ashley John-Baptiste, who performed in boy band ‘The Risk’ and currently reports for and produces the BBC's BAFTA-winning Victoria Derbyshire programme. Ashley advised students to pursue their dreams and not let failures stop you from getting what you want.

Among the students recognised for their outstanding achievements was adult learner Alan Thompson, who was awarded the Outstanding Adult Learner Award. Alan completed Level 2 and Level 3 Plumbing at Eastchurch and was an exemplary learner, showing hard work and dedication. He now works at Sheppey College.

Carpentry student Thomas Griffiths was given the Principal’s Award for Excellence for completing his course ahead of other students and also completing an Advanced Level 3 roofing task. He is predicted to get a Distinction overall and is looking forward to studying quantity surveying at Loughborough University.

SU President Jessica Foster, who is also a member of the NUS Zones Committee for Further Education, was given the prestigious Chairman’s Award. She said, ‘I was put forward to host the Celebration of Achievement event with Elliott, recognising students who have excelled at College. It was a great event, and I was taken by surprise on being awarded the Chairman’s award. I couldn't be more pleased and overwhelmed! I was given a certificate, trophy, cheque and what I thought was a box of chocolates, which turned out to be an IPad Mini! I have loved every part of my course and time as Student President, and I couldn't be more grateful for my time at Canterbury College’.

The deserving winners received prizes kindly donated by sponsors: Goldwell, SAGA, Global Media, Barretts, Nusteel, Peter Messer, Tarvos Wealth, and WP Contractors.
