The College and the Games
The College is committed to providing students with as many opportunities as are available in the lead up to the 2012 Olympic Games. This is demonstrated by us being the first college in the UK to be part of the Get Set Network.
The Get Set Network
The aim of the Get Set Network is to bring schools, colleges and non-mainstream learning providers together in a dynamic and inspirational way and encouraging them to integrate the Olympic and Paralympic values into their planning for sustained improvement.
In this way the London 2012 Games will leave a lasting educational, cultural and social legacy. Read about how our students are working towards the Olympic Games.
Instilling values at College
Canterbury College hopes all students aspire to the Olympic and Paralympic values which are as follows:
- The Olympic Values
- Respect - Fair play; knowing one's own limits; and taking care of one's health and the environment
- Excellence - How to give the best to oneself, on the field of play or in life; taking part; and progressing accroding to one's own objectives
- Friendship - How to understand each other despite any differences
The Olympic Values are based on the history of the Paralympic Games and the tradition of fair play and honourable sports competition.
Work so far
Over the past 12 months we have arranged lots of activities designed to engage people in the run up to the Olympics. The activities look to cater for wide audiences including students from college, local schools, staff members and also local residents.
Get Set Ticketshare
As we are members of the Get Set Network we will receive some guarenteed tickets to selected events throughout the games period. This gives us the opportunity to pass these tickets onto students, It is likely that in the run up to the Olympic Games we will have various competitions where students can win tickets.
Bridging the Gap
This is a qualification that we are running which looks at event stewarding and all students who pass will be given a guaranteed interview for working at the Olympic Games. Read more on our Bridging the Gap courses.
Meridian TV coverage
We have built up a great relationship with local media around the Olympic Games. This has resulted in us being featured on two occasions over the past few months, Going forward we have other activities planned that we will hope to have featured on TV again. View our coverage on our Facebook pages.
Fair for All
Canterbury College looks to promote and celebrate Equality and Diversity through our termly festival. Recently we were delighted to have British Paralympian Danny Crates talking to sports students about the values of the two Games and his experience of competing.
Success in Work Skills
Canterbury College students from the Dance, Music, Graphic Design and Uniformed Public Services departments have travelled across the UK to compete in a series of national events and competitions. Read more on our success at World Skills.
500 days to the Olympics
To mark 500 days to the Olympics we decided to run an event to show students the messages behind the sports, We also had computers set up where students could register for tickets.
