General FAQS for Supply Applicants

What is a 'Supply' Lecturer?

A supply lecturer is employed by the College to provide cover for one of a variety of reasons, eg. to offer specialist expertise on a specific unit within a course, to teach a particular short course, or to cover for the long-term absence of an established member of staff.

What is the selection process for supply?

You should complete the application form demonstrating how you meet the criteria defined by the generic job description and person specification for supply lecturing. The form should be clearly marked with the curriculum area(s) within which you feel able to teach. Short-listing will then be completed by the relevant manager with reference to the criteria detailed within the person specification, and successful candidates will be invited to interview.

Does an offer of employment follow a successful interview?

If you are successful at interview, you will be offered inclusion on the College's Approved Staff List. This does not constitute a guarantee of employment or contract with the College, but means that you have been approved to cover any teaching that may arise for which the relevant manager considers you suitable. At this stage, we ask applicants to confirm their acceptance of inclusion along with details of their availability for supply work.

What happens after I am included on the Approved Staff List?

When circumstances are such that there is a demand for supply cover, the relevant manager will contact you to arrange for a period of employment. At this point a contract of employment will be offered for a short fixed term from one session to up to one year, depending on need.

Will I be paid an hourly rate?

Canterbury College recognises that each hour of teaching time necessitates a proportion of time for preparation. As a consequence, supply staff are paid according to a sessional rate (a session being calculated as a specific period of teaching plus preparation time). Those rates vary according to a formula for salary calculation which takes into account experience gained outside of the traditional workplace:

  • base grade (B16)
  • + increment for degree/equivalent qualification
  • + increment for teaching qualification
  • + increment for every 2 years of relevant experience (over the age of 21)
  • = salary point (up to E27)

Can I apply even if I don't have a teaching qualification?

If your application demonstrates the relevant knowledge, skills and experience, you will be invited to interview, and any subsequent offer of inclusion on the Approved Staff List will be subject to your completion of the Further & Adult Education Teaching Certificate (C&G 7307) within the first 12 months of being called in to teach. The course is provided and funded by the College and offers a 40 hour introduction to teaching.

What is the likelihood of becoming a permanent member of staff?

If a permanent post arises (whether full- or part-time) the College's Equal Opportunities policy is such that it will generally be advertised, at which stage your application will benefit from experience gained through supply teaching. In certain circumstances posts may be advertised internally only and if you are teaching on a supply basis, you will be able to access the internal recruitment bulletin and apply accordingly.

NB. This information is intended for guidance only and does not form part of any subsequent contract of employment.
