Partner: Narva Vocational Training Centre (from Narva, Estonia)
Programme: International Education
The International Education programme lasts five weeks. It gives Narva students an insight into British culture, develop their English language skills and take part in work experience with local companies.
Students spend the first week at College developing their English language skills. They then go on work placement for four weeks in areas such as building, engineering and catering. Throughout the stay, students live with host families. This is another chance for them to experience British culture and put their English language skills to use.
Darja Zerebtsova, 18, is on our 5 week programme. She spent the first week at developing her English language skills at Canterbury College, and is spending the other 4 weeks working in the kitchens at Café du Soleil.
“I do lunch and dinner services. I’ve worked in kitchens before, so this is good for me – I’m learning something new every day. I enjoy all of it, especially making things look on the plate when they’re served up. Canterbury’s a beautiful place and when I’m not at Café du Soleil I like going into town to get a coffee and read. I’m staying with a host family who are very friendly and nice to me.”
Here is what Karén Sukiasyan, of the Narva Vocational Training Centre, said about the experience of visiting Canterbury College:
"We have had a fruitful relationship with Canterbury College since 2013. Our students are always happy for the chance to visit the college, the town of Canterbury and gain work experience in the UK. Another advantage of this cooperation is cultural and linguistic. Students are hosted in families which gives them an extra benefit to practice their language skills with native speakers not only at work on professional topics but also in everyday situations at home. Their professional, linguistic and of course cultural advancement is definitely obvious upon arrival back home which is the most important aspect of a visit of this kind. Thank you, Canterbury College team!"
