We are proud and delighted to announce the formation of the Canterbury School of Visual Arts at Canterbury College. Visual Arts at Canterbury College is an exciting and highly successful department. Our recent GOOD Ofsted inspection celebrates the high levels of outcomes for learners, the confidence and ambition exhibited by our students as they explore creative disciplines, engage in innovative project work and a range of live opportunities. All of which support their progression and career aspirations. Our new provision introduces a range of courses from Level 1-6 incorporating specialist pathways.
Art & Design
Accredited by the University of the Arts London, our Level 1 and Level 2 UAL Art & Design courses will develop your knowledge, practical skills and understanding of a comprehensive range of art and design activities. You will study units that include drawing and painting, printmaking, graphics, fashion and textiles, 3-D design, time-based (film/animation) ceramics and contextual studies.
You will have the chance to visit galleries and museums and be encouraged to take your next step in an art and design career. Upon successful completion of the Level 2 course you are able to apply for a Level 3 course in either Art and Design, Graphic Design and Illustration, Photography or Fashion and Textiles.
The UAL Level 2 Art and Design course is equivalent to 4 GCSE’s and will prepare you for further education in Art and Design, or employment in a related industry.

Our Level 3 Extended Diploma in Art & Design will provide you with the necessary skills & portfolio to enable you to take the next step in an Art and Design career and apply for a degree in a specialism of your choice. This course will teach you a range of practical skills including drawing, painting, printmaking, 3-D design, portfolio preparation and contextual studies.
The course provides an opportunity for those who have an interest in the Visual Arts to explore, develop & test their creativity within a qualification structure, which is stimulating & demanding, whilst being supportive in the transition from further to higher education.

Accredited by the University of the Arts London, our UAL Extended Diploma in Graphic Design and Illustration course will enable you to explore a broad range of graphic design and illustration processes and give you a confident understanding of visual communication. This course has a strong vocational emphasis, and will introduce you to 2D, 3D and time based subjects in order to realise your strengths. You will additionally develop skills in digital illustration, animation, typography, branding, printmaking, composition and layout design.
You will become familiar with using the creative cycle: a valuable skill recognised by employers. In this context you will learn to manage professional projects from research, to idea development and fully-realised graphic solutions. Previous students have progressed to undertake specialist courses in: Graphic Design, Branding, Illustration, Animation, Advertising and Marketing, Shoe Design, Fashion Marketing, Visual Merchandising, Fashion Design, Fashion Illustration, Product Design, Transport Design, Computer Generated Art Games Design.

Accredited by the University of the Arts London, our UAL Extended Diploma in Photography provides the opportunity to learn and develop a variety of techniques, creative processes and theories across the specialism.

Studying on our accredited UAL Art & Design Extended Diploma in Fashion & Textiles will provide you with the opportunity to explore a broad range of techniques and materials. This course will give you an understanding of the fashion industry and design cycle, developing skills including trend research, fashion design, garment construction, illustration and fashion styling. This advanced level course is designed to give you a broad base of knowledge and experience to prepare you for employment or progression to a higher level course or training in the workplace.
You will gain: Practical 2D and 3D skills through research and design development, Organisation skills, planning and time management, Evaluative skills when reviewing personal work, Self-motivation and working independently inside and outside of college, Experience of team work to problem solve and be able to present ideas. Level 4 Provision
The UAL accredited Foundation in Art and Design provides an essential introduction to the creative arts by allowing you to explore and to experiment with a wide range of media. It is designed to maximise creative exploration through an art and design based programme, which provides students with the opportunity to develop creative expression by learning an applied range of complementary art and design skills and processes.
This course will help students develop communication, problem solving and interpersonal skills. This foundation sees guidance offered by our experienced staff, helping you choose a specialist pathway that’s right for you. The course will give you the opportunity to explore a broad range of creative fields, developing skills and knowledge and preparing you for further educational and career-based opportunities in the worlds of art and design. While studying on the course you will receive a comprehensive introduction to art and design subject areas through studio workshops, seminars and lectures. Students will follow a programme of drawing and mixed media to develop practical skills and research methods. Exploratory and pathway units will be consolidated to propose and implement a personal Final Major Project.
Candidates may progress to an HNC/HND or a Degree in subjects such as, Computer Arts and Design, Graphic Design, Photography, Fashion, Design Illustration, Fine Art, Visual Communication, or 3D Design.

Level 5-6 Provision
Prepare for a career as a professional creative with these specialist HNDs in Photography, Graphic Design and a top up degree in Visual Arts. Develop creative skills, employability and work on projects to get you work ready:
This course encourages you to develop the knowledge and skills required to be a professional photographer. Projects blend creative and technical skills. They include the exploration of fashion, reportage and location photography. The course also embraces the contemporary use of video with the photographic image by developing your video shooting and post-production editing skills. Importantly, the course also looks to enhance your creative use of visual language and wider understanding of photography through a self-directed research project and studies that prepare you for professional work.
This course is aimed at people that want to become professional graphic designers. You will develop the necessary underpinning skills and understanding required to become a graphic designer. You will explore the role of typography, branding, illustration, information graphics and packaging within contemporary design practice. The course will focus on developing your creative practice, working with employers to develop employability skills. As you progress through the course, you will be encouraged to choose the direction of your project, so you can explore and develop your own visual language. This will be supported by individual and group tutorials. You will also be able to participate in study trips to Amsterdam, Berlin and South Africa.
This is a top-up degree course for students who have already completed the HND or equivalent, who are seeking an in-depth creative experience. This course aims to develop students’ critical understanding of their chosen area of creative practice through the development of project work and an extended written assignment. The final module of the course encourages students to develop a series of appropriate promotional tools to prepare them for employment. You will also be able to participate in study trips to Amsterdam, Berlin and South Africa.

This course is an introduction to both Adobe Photoshop and Adobe InDesign and is ideal for students with no previous experience.
This course will teach you how to use Adobe Illustrator - industry-standard software used for producing print, multimedia and online graphics. It can be used to create such elements as illustrations, drawings, maps, logos, advertisements, multimedia and web navigation graphics.
This course will teach you the basic concepts of digital photography. You will learn in a relaxed and professional atmosphere, and have access to industry-standard Mac suites (and more).
