Work experience - 5 reasons why it is so important

In the past year, the College has worked with more than 310 employers to provide work experience and apprenticeships. It is important to get the opportunity to develop the skills needed to help with the transition from school or college into the workplace.

Here are 5 reasons why we think work experience is so important:

It looks great on your CV

Securing employment is increasingly competitive, and more often than not employers are looking to hire someone with both the qualifications and the experience needed for the role. Work experience is a great way to set you apart from other candidates.

It builds confidence and develops your skills

You learn many transferable skills whilst studying at College, however there are some practical skills that you might not be able to pick up without real life work experience. Participating in work experience builds your confidence, which is essential when making the transition from education to work.

It helps improve your teamwork

Teamwork is essential in any industry environment. Work experience enables you to develop and improve your interpersonal and communication skills outside of the classroom.

You get to know the industry

Work experience gives you a realistic insight into the industry you hope to build a career in. Working in a new environment will allow you to identify areas for improvement, where you excel, and what you do or do not enjoy.

It is good for meeting people

The people you meet whilst on work experience can come in useful when you have finished studying. It is a great way to get to know people who could potentially help you progress within your chosen career. It is also a great way to make new friends.

Work experience is crucial for ensuring students are ready to switch from education to the workplace. Any work experience and employment is encouraged, and our recruitment professionals are able to provide ideas for work experience placements and to match the right person to the right job.
