Advice & Guidance

We want our students to get the most out of the Canterbury College experience and we and we have a range of support available.

The Student Information Centre

This is the one-stop-shop where you can find all these services and people. During Term Time we’re open from 8.45am-7pm Monday – Wednesday, 10 am-7pm Thursday and 8.45-4.30 Friday. Call us, email or just drop in anytime; we’re always here to help.

Before you start your course

  • You can attend one of our Open Days or arrange a personal visit and tour of the College and our facilities.
  • You can also speak to the team about courses with us or with other providers, about student finance or about personal or practical support for you at College.

Your first day at College

You may feel a bit nervous at the thought of coming to College; you’re familiar with school and know what to expect. The first week will fly by and by the end of it you will have:

  1. Met your teaching staff & personal tutor
  2. Received a detailed outline of study and your timetable
  3. Found your way around the College
  4. Visited the Student Information Centre
  5. Joined the Library
  6. Joined the Students’ Union
  7. …and made friends.

Support and Advice during your course

When you start your course you will be allocated a personal tutor who will keep a watchful eye on your progress and will be there for you if you have any difficulties with your course or personally. Your Personal Tutor will be your first point of contact if you have any problems with your studies.

Our Learning Mentor in the Student Information Centre can also work with you to make sure you achieve your goals. You can contact the Learning Mentor on 01227 811111, extension 2028 or email mentor@canterburycollege.ac.uk

We want all our students to enjoy, achieve and stay safe during their time with us. Additional Learning Support (ALS)

The Additional Learning Support team works with a wide and varied range of learners that have additional needs including disabilities, learning difficulties and mental health problems. Support to help with teaching and learning is planned against individual needs following assessment by the team. Worried about the costs of coming to College?

Our Student Funding team is there to help you with the costs of travel, child care, levies and field trips, equipment and books. You can ask them about EMA or any other financial support you may need.

EMA

The EMA (Educational Maintenance Allowance) is a means-tested payment of up to £30 a week - payable to students who are aged 16-18 on 31 August 2011. During 2011/12 EMA is only available to previous recipients; no new applications are being accepted. For more information contact the EMA Helpline on 0800 121 8989 or ema@canterburycollege.ac.uk

ALG

ALG for students aged 19 and over on a full-time course and studying their first Level 2 or Level 3 qualification is no longer available to new applicants. The Learner Support Fund

Need help with the costs of studying? Please ask about the College's learner Support Fund. This is a means tested fund that is available to students with a low household income. Eligible students must be enrolled on a course of at least twelve guided learning hours per week over a minimum of six consecutive weeks. Students must meet the residency criteria.

Help with Travel

If you are under 19 and live over three miles away from the College, you should apply to your Local Education Authority in the first instance for help with the cost of travel.

If you have problems with your application or if it is turned down, please contact the Canterbury College Learning Support Fund Co-ordinator on 01227 811197 for details of Learner Support Fund Awards.

Moving on to University or Work?

We can help you prepare your UCAS application and Personal Statement or your CV. You can speak one –to-one with a Guidance Adviser or Connexions Careers Adviser and look at all your options.

Basic Skills Support

Support is available in the Essential Skills Centre. Trained Basic Skills staff can help with assignment writing, portfolio building, presentations and group work. It may also be possible to take our Acorn Course alongside your main course of study if your timetable allows. This 10 week course is for people who wish to brush up on their English and/or Maths and learn some computer skills and can lead to a City & Guilds or OCR qualification.
 

Essential Skills Centre

Our Essential Skills Centre is a drop-in centre which offers support for all students in a friendly, relaxed environment:

• Study Skills e.g. essay writing, revision
• English and Maths
• Tips on using IT to assist your studies including the Internet
• Research for assignments.

Sexual Health Clinic

Looking for confidential advice and support about sexual health and relationships?

A Connexions Health Personal Advisor is available for information about sexual health and relationships, between 12pm and 2pm on Tuesday and Thursday (Term-time only) in the SIC to speak in confidence to students about:

  • Contraception
  • Sexually Transmitted Infections
  • Chlamydia screening
  • Healthy relationships
  • Register for free condoms
  • Emotional wellbeing


Other Support

The Personal Adviser is based in the SIC and can provide support and referral for issues such as health, money and housing as well as providing general careers advice and advice for young people leaving care.
