Students from Canterbury College have been given the chance to join contractors on the site of the major redevelopment taking place at the New Dover Road campus.

Second year students, Nathan Youngs, 26, from Westgate-on-Sea and Elliott Webb, 19 from Whitstable, are studying for a BTEC National Diploma in Building Services Engineering.

The pair were accompanied on site by Dave Bassett, Project Manager for Wates Construction who are carrying out the work. The students spent a day learning about every aspect of the project and what construction techniques are being used.

The steel frame of the building is now complete and brickwork is underway, inside the structure the staircases are being put in place, the roof is being installed and the windows are arriving on site.

The new building is the third phase of redevelopment at Canterbury College and when completed, the £19.5 million facility will include state of the art facilities for students in the following areas: Hair and Beauty, Sports Therapy, Veterinary Nursing, Public Services, Health and Social Care, Early Years and Supported Learning and Technology.

The build is on programme and due to be completed in December 2011 with the College taking possession early in the New Year 2012. It will link construction phases one and two at the College which were completed almost two years ago.

Last month Wates Construction were awarded for the work they have done to minimise disruption to students and nearby residents with a Considerate Constructors certificate. They achieved Beyond Compliance status in all eight areas: considerate, environment, cleanliness, good neighbour, respectful, safe, responsible and accountable.
