Canterbury College Hairdressing students’ stylish and creative cuts wowed industry professionals at the College’s annual hairdressing competition.

Year 3 NVQ Hairdressing students showed off their skills in the closely fought contest. The 12 students were each assigned a model whose hair they had a couple of hours to cut, style and colour. The action was spread over two days, and judges watched as the final touches were made to the haircuts on the second day, Friday, 16 December.

20-year-old Michael Wilson’s part-sweeping, part-shaved cut (with added leopard print) on model Chloe Brett was chosen as the winner by a judging panel made up of Goldwell hairstylist Toby Andrews, Prisca Chireka of Beepee Botique in Wincheap and Mike Vallance of Back2MyRoots hairdressing training.

Michael was awarded industry standard hair straighteners for winning the competition. He said: “I’m really pleased to have won. I wanted my deigns to stand out from the crowd and decided to do something really creative.”

Second placed Georgia Twyman won industry standard hair clippers and third placed Amy Wood was given a hair maintenance kit. The high quality of all students’ work was praised by the judges, who remarked how close the contest was.

Judge Prisca said: “The quality was quite outstanding. I’d be happy to have any of them working for me. The competition was so close that all of them were winners.”

Canterbury College’s Section Manager for Hairdressing, Kim Heath, was similarly impressed. She said: “I think the quality was amazing. The students put in a lot of work and have been thinking about their hair designs since September. ”

The hair competition marked the final time Hairdressing students will use their current building. In the New Year, they will move into a brand new multimillion pound block with state-of-the-art facilities.
