Lord Mayor Visits Art Show at Canterbury College
The Lord Mayor of Canterbury has paid a visit to Canterbury College to see a range of art work by past and present staff and students that has been put on display to raise funds for a charity in memory of a former lecturer.
The John Millest Trust was established in 1995 following the early death from cancer of John Millest who was a lecturer in Art and in History of Art at the College from 1973 to 1994. This is the seventh year the exhibition has been staged and John’s life and enthusiasm for art is commemorated in the show. The generous spirit in which our present students have contributed to the work of the Trust provides a fitting link between past and present at Canterbury College.
The aims of the trust are to enable students of Art and History of Art, who would not otherwise be able to do so, to take part in organised visits to galleries in Britain and abroad, and to enhance and promote the teaching of these subjects in the College. To date, over 150 travel grants have been awarded, and the “John Millest Collection” in the College library contains approximately 700 books.
Councillor Pat Todd joined other invited guests to enjoy a little unusual Christmas shopping at a private view of the paintings, framed photographs, prints, ceramics, textiles, jewellery and sculptures on Friday 10th December. Exhibits ranged in value and complexity from small ceramics and mugs created by students to £1000 sculptures created by a member of teaching staff at the College.
The art work remains on display on The Street at the College and a percentage of profits from any sales will be donated to the fund.
