Healthy Mind, Healthy Body Event

On Tuesday 5th February, Canterbury College held a Healthy Minds Healthy Bodies Awareness Day.  Students and staff put together a series of exhibitions and training sessions looking at the health of the body and mind. The event increased awareness of healthy eating, personal care, disabilities, sexual health, drugs awareness and exercise, both physical and mental.

In the College’s Sport Centre there were demonstrations of equipment and exercises for keeping fit.  As well as physical body workouts, many took time out to exercise their grey matter at the ‘Brain Gym’.  This involved a series of exercises designed to stimulate the brain cells.

There was advice on care of the hair and the opportunity to look at head lice under the microscope, as well as top tips on how to prevent and get rid of them. Students and staff also benefited from some relaxation with anti-stress massage techniques by the College’s Beauty Salon.

The importance of regular hand washing was also highlighted including information on super bugs, what they are and how to ensure hands are clean to prevent the spread of infection.  There were display stands on a variety of topics including communicable illnesses and their recognition, meningitis, mental health support, healthy foods from different cultural groups and the healthy menu choice in the College’s new refectory.

Sandra Langley, Section Manager for Early Years/Play Work and Chair person for the College’s Health Forum organised the event.  Sandra said, “the idea of the day was a health promotion for students and staff.  It’s been fun and a real success.  It’s important everyone is reminded about the benefits of a healthy lifestyle.”
