Flowers at Canterbury College Get Royal Approval

One of the displays by students at Canterbury College for the visit of Prince Edward to Canterbury

Displays of flowers created by students from Canterbury College got Royal approval during a recent visit to the city by Prince Edward.

The Earl of Wessex was in Canterbury to view progress on the £25.6million redevelopment of the Marlowe Theatre in his role as Patron of the theatre.

Part of the visit included a lunch at the nearby Kings School, where students from the Floristry Department at Canterbury College had been commissioned to provide suitable displays for the Prince and other VIP’s.

Fiona Roberts, Floristry Tutor at Canterbury College, said: “This was a great opportunity for the students to work on such a high profile commission. They all did a fantastic job and I’m sure the Prince was impressed with what he saw, although it’s the first time we’ve had to set up a display with sniffer dogs taking more than a natural interest in our tropical flowers.”

Flowers used in the displays included tropical Heliconias and Alpinas along with Cat Palms and Orchids. The Floristry Department at Canterbury College has previously provided displays for a business dinner with the Governor of the Bank of England and staged displays at Hampton Court, Leeds Castle and the Kent County Show.

Fiona also said: “The displays provided by the students are of such a high standard we are seeing an increase in orders at our Campus based shop, and I am receiving more commissions for larger events than ever before. We are also seeing an increase in orders from wedding parties – with the Royal Wedding coming up in April perhaps Prince Edward will recommend that we provide the flowers for William and Kate!”
