Meeting Equality Duties Through a Single Equality Scheme

Objective 1

For the anti-bullying group to analyse and investigate the incidence of homophobic language in the College and, based upon the findings, to arrange workshops through the Stonewall Charity for students and staff by 31st December 2012, with the objective to reduce this abusive language.

Objective 2

To develop new and innovative support and learning strategies that improve the attendance rates for young unaccompanied asylum seeker students, so that they improve, initially, by 5% by 31st December 2012 and subsequently to the same level as their counterparts.

Objective 3

For curriculum and support sections to participate, promote and celebrate diversity with community agencies at the College’s Fair for All events. For these events to focus on all 9 Protective Characteristics and to take place at least 3 times by 31st December 2012.

Continued and sustained involvement of people (staff and learners) reflecting the range of communities and all strands of diversity will be ensured through the following channels of involvement:

  • Review of the effectiveness of the action plan
  • Preparation of subsequent schemes
  • Implementing the scheme
  • Annual reporting
  • Preparation of subsequent schemes
  • Publishing the scheme

Public authorities are also subject to specific duties, these will support organisations to meet the General Duty. The specific duties set out the requirements to produce a Disability Equality Scheme. The following groups must be involved in producing the scheme.

  • Equality & Diversity Committee
  • Staff Members
  • Trade union representatives
  • Learners
  • Focus/ Involvement Groups
  • Equality & Diversity Forum

The College will continue to develop the Equality Scheme to ensure that the following key areas are addressed effectively:

  • Involvement of a range of people from diverse communities
  • Mapping the arrangements that are in place for gathering information about the
  • Organisation's performance in strengthening diversity
  • Impact Assessment of the College's policies, processes and functions (to include current policies)
  • Three year Equality Action Plan setting out the College's approach to promoting and mainstreaming equality across all areas of the Organisation
  • Monitoring and reviewing the effectiveness of the Equality Action Plan
    Engagement with internal and external partners to support the College in securing improvements in service delivery to all communities
  • Publication of the results from Impact Assessments and monitoring information
