Canterbury College's impressive new multimillion building has finally been unveiled. The new £19m A Block building includes state of the art facilities for students in the following areas: Hair and Beauty, sports therapy, Veterinary Nursing, Public Services, Health and Social Care, Early Years, Supported Learning and Technology.

Canterbury College completed Phase 1 and 2 (£50 million) of their campus redevelopment programme in 2008. April 2006 saw the completion of Phase 1, which included the new Children’s Centre, Technology Centre, Land Based Centre, Motor Vehicle Centre and the Post-16 Centre.

Phase 3 November 2011

Phase 2 was completed in February 2008 gives the college a unique, street-like layout which has ‘front of house’ services open to the public including a snack shop, a travel shop and restaurant complete with training facilities. Both phases were completed in time and within budget and also won a South East Building Excellence Award.

The £50 Million redevelopment project at Canterbury College won the LABC South East Building Excellence Awards event held in Brighton in June 2009.

The new A Block was opened in January 2012, having started with the demolition of the two teaching blocks - Becket/Cramner, which were built in the 1960’s. The demolition started in March 2010 with building work commencing shortly after.

The A Block building has been designed as part of Phase 3, to achieve an ‘excellent’ rating in Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method (BREEAM) for best practice in sustainable design. The college staff and students have had numerous site visits throughout the construction period & it has been used as an excellent learning resource for Media and Building Services students.

The impressive 6,400sqm 3 storey building, which links Phase 1 and 2 buildings via a covered collonade was ready for curriculum teaching in January 2012.

Canterbury College was the first College in the country to carry out self funded redevelopment work on this scale.

Principal Alison Clarke said, "The College has successfully completed its first three phases of redevelopment on schedule and on budget – even winning the Regional Building Excellence Award for Phase 2."

"The College can now boast state of the art accommodation still unmatched in East Kent and continuously improving performance and success by our students, trainees and staff. The College will now focus on other options for the future progressive redevelopment of the remaining parts of the old campus building stock.”
